i’m so bitter about female representation in the hp universe, you won’t believe. our principle female - hermione - is wonderful and she is everything i aspire to be (ie. BADASS) but some of jkr’s commenents about her makes me indulge in some major side-eyeing. jkr seems to believe that hermione represents everything a girl should be, and others (lavender and pansy espesically) are treated as substandard to compared to the glorious hermione who cares more about her grades than boys, making her a ~special snowflake~ (not that hermione thinks she’s a special snowflake, but it seems that jkr thinks she is).
this pisses me off. pansy, lavender and hermione are seen through incredible bias in-universe, and out of universe. pansy is portrayed in a negative light because she fawns over draco and bullies hermione. now, i will never defend bulling ever, but what i will say is, isn’t pansy reacting to years of anti-gryffindor bias (exactly the same as the weasley anti-slytherin bias, fyi) and harry, hermione and ron don’t like pansy, so her general existance is a blight on the world of our golden trio. on dh: how fucking dare pansy want to hand over a boy she doesn’t like to save her own life and the lives of others? how dare she? /sarcasm mode
next, lavender. lavender is seen pretty much as a joke, in-universe. she’s giggily and interested in boys, and, yes, she makes a bit of a prat out of herself in hbp. basically, lavender is typical teenage girl! she’s not hermione, who has the fate of the wizarding world looming over her and her friend’s heads. she’s a girl who (thinks) she’s in love, dealing with school and exams and general shenanigans. if there is anybody who claims that they haven’t been that weirdly obsessive over a significant other is in denial, because, yes, at one stage, we can all remember being clingy and giggily and silly over someone. things that fandom forgets: lavender is a gryffindor. she’s a lion, not a butterfly.
oh my god i legitimately love you
one of the things i will NEVER get over is how female characters that aren’t hermione/ginny/luna are treated. Lavender’s biggest crime was being a teenage girl with a crush. Yes, she was a little annoying but my god, she did not deserve the treatment she got in the text.
Even Hermione as a character leaves much to be desired. Don’t get me wrong, she’s my fave of the trio but she doesn’t get the character development she deserves. She’s muggleborn, so she’s stepped into an entirely new world and is learning that there are people who want her dead because of who she is - tell us how she feels JK! She’s fighting a war over her own blood, and we never get to see her really talk about it. She goes to extreme lengths for ‘the greater good’ - scarring a girl (possibly permanently) for refusing to lie to authorities, trapping Beetle!Skeeter in a jar, letting Umbridge be carried off into the forest by the centaurs, etc. - there’s a twisted, dark side to her. And we never get to really hear about that.
I mean, I’ll always love these books but the older I get, the more disillusioned I grow about them.
the treatment of fleur in hbp really bugged me and the fact that jkr didn’t give pansy a happy ending (but she gave draco one, even though draco was actually a death eater while pansy’s biggest crime was being an asshole from ages 11 through 17 and wanting to hand over potter which holy shit i would do in a fucking heartbeat and i do like draco but why is he more deserving of a happy ending than pansy is idgi) because pansy represented all the girls that bullied jkr in school made me side-eye the shit out of her
but the treatment of fleur is something that will always piss me off
and also cho chang
i’m very disapointed in myself that i didn’t mention cho or fleur because they are also ridiculously abused by the fandom for;
having their boyfriend murdered(!) and dealing with it badly (HOW FUCKING DARE SHE!)
being a bit rude to the family of your fiancée who are consistently rude.
also, jk’s rule of “to have a happy ending, you must be married” is the biggest bullshit to ever be written because seriously. seriously.
Re: Cho - i fully believe we’re meant to sympathise with her at first, based on the scene where Hermione kind of explains how she must be feeling when she goes out with Harry. We’re meant to hate her later on because she sticks by Marietta when Hermione scars her (WHICH IS TOTALLY THE RIGHT THING TO DO, THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU JKR).
ALSO bolded for emphasis because when i think about that damn epilogue and the fucking kids with their awful (also: really uncreative) names and ALL WAS WELL and i just want to smash things. omg no lie, i once got involved in a conversation about HP in my biology class and someone brought up the epilogue and I shouted, “I SPIT ON THE EPILOGUE!!11!” and my biology teacher gave me this concerned side-eye omg just flames on the side of my face when i think about that damn epilogue tbh!!!
I kind of love reading discussions on the internet about fandom/pop culture + gender roles. (College has made me realize that I’m only interested in gender studies in relation to contemporary culture, and that theory/history bores the hell out of me.)
Sleep with someone you aren’t sure you should, take a job without knowing where it leads, tell her she looks great when she talks about cooking, tell him he looks sad when he drives his car, don’t put things away, take road trips without directions, forget to lock the doors and let’s not say no.
Cleanliness is the hobgoblin of memorable lives, so let’s all make a mess of things.
